Wedding Details + Flat Lay: What to include & how to prepare
Wedding photos tell the story of your special day. So much thoughtful planning and details are all coming together to celebrate your love and union as a couple! So your details deserve a highlighted photo, called a Flat lay. This is a beautiful way to start off your story and looks amazing in your physical wedding album.
Here are the most common items featured in wedding flat lay details:
Invitation suite (multiple copies in case of damaged edges)
Shoes
Jewelry
Rings (ALL of them) + specialty ring box
Perfume / Cologne
Florals - ask your florist for extra “clippings” to include in your detail photos
Dress on a specialty hanger (remove ribbon hanger loops or tuck inside ahead of time)
Veil and/or hair accessories
Vow books
Purse
Watch
Cufflinks
Tie/bowtie
Customized wedding items/favors (i.e. matchbook)
Some fun ways to add your own personal touch is to include:
Sentimental items
Wax seals
Ribbons
Jewelry tray
Vintage trays (big or small)
Sunglasses
Stationary items (i.e. stamps, vintage scissors)
Extra clothing clippings from alterations
*Please Note: This is not a must-have list. Some of these items may not apply or feel necessary for your own wedding story. This is simply a list to help get you started. Some people like to keep it simple with only the rings and a few other accessories. That is totally ok! It is meant to be unique and styled around the important items to you.
Some items will be photographed all together and separately. Your partner’s details can also be captured together with yours or separately.
Nighttime flat lays are very candid and fun! It usually happens around your sweetheart table during the reception party. I love the mess of half eaten cake, drinks and napkins all skewed around. Sometimes I’ll add extra accessories or lightly move things around that make it look even more aesthetically pleasing and fun. If this interests you please let me know beforehand and we’ll make it happen!
Some couples also opt out of flat lay photos all together - especially if they’ve decided not to have getting ready photography coverage or prefer the focus was on more portraits. We can always take detail photos of accessories while being worn/put on instead if you prefer.
Whether you want to keep it simple with just your shoes and jewelry, or want a big layout of all your accessories, detail flat lay photos can be a great way to start the storytelling of documenting your special day finally all coming together!
